k&k episode 111 - the one where they learn the alphabet... and stuff...
With everyone's favourite Vivi back in the coffee table studio, we start off episode 111 with an impromptu sing-a-long, Vivi tells us a TNT story, then we debate a bit about ads on public television again, and then we derail completely and start talking about dubbing and French game shows on television. We also chat about pizza, beer, spice levels and the French inability to queue (or stand in line, for those Americans out there).
This episode was brought to you by the word "abécédaire" (alphabet book).

There is nothing classier than the French Wheel of Fortune. But Êtes vous plus fort qu'un éleve de 10 ans has a catchier theme tune.
What I love about TNT is that you can get some shows in VO with it - imagine "Lost" & "Grey's Anatomy" in English!! TF1 is big on it, and so is W9 (they sometimes have "Kyle XY" and "Veronica Mars" in English). Arte also offers a lot of the older American movies in VO.And the money for the new ad law is supposed to come from extra taxes on electronic goods - on TVs, VCRs, mobile phones, etc. The private channels will also be taxed on the money they get from commercials.Just as a fun fact, they're estimating it will cost around 1 billion total to do this (800 million for the loss of add revenue and 200 million to buy more shows to fill the air time that was previously taken up by commercials).
It was amazing to me that my husband didn't recognize voices of actors such as Jimmy Stewart or John Wayne because he had never heard them in their native language. All the movies were dubbed in Italian. Certain voices are so distinctive and such a part of their identity, it was so weird he didn't have a clue. you definitely miss out on things when dubbed. subtitles are better =)
I've never seen the 5th grader show in the States, but I did see it in the UK - Are you Smarter than a 10 year old is the name.PS - Katia - still listening in my office, but I got a new one WITH A DOOR. how exciting is that?!

"To do a K&K". OMG this is too funny Vivi and sooo true, I love it! I'm sooooo going to write a wikipedia entry about this new useful expression!
